  • Early Calgary mayoral polling suggests that incumbent Naheed Nenshi would have fierce electoral competition in a fall mayoral election.
  • Nenshi would garner 44% of the vote among decided and leaning voters, while his closest competitor, Jeromy Farkas, would get 39%. Jyoti Gondek manages 8% of the decided vote, with Brad Field earning 2%. 7% of respondents intending to vote for someone else entirely.
  • However, given Mr. Nenshi’s intention not to run again, and that among all voters, 22% were undecided even with Nenshi included, it is clear the fall election for Mayor in Calgary will be wide open until the field solidifies closer to election day.
  • Over the winter holidays, Nenshi’s chief of staff and one other staffer were found to have vacationed in Hawaii. While Nenshi apologized, the two staffers were not disciplined, voters opinions on the matter were as follows:
    • 29% believe Nenshi should have fired the staffers, while 20% believe that the two staffers and Nenshi should resign from their positions.
    • On the other hand, 26% of voters said that the initial apology from the Mayor was enough for them, with another 10% saying that Nenshi and the staffers involved had done nothing wrong.
    • 15% were unsure on the matter or didn’t know.
