Honeymoon for Pallister

June 16, (Ottawa, ON) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll conducted for the Winnipeg Sun finds honeymoon polling numbers for Brian Pallister and the PCs. The Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.81%, 19 times out of 20.

If an election were held today Palliser’s Tories would receive 58% of the vote compared to 28% for the NDP among decided and leaning voters. Asked about Pallister’s job performance as Premier 54% approve of his performance so far. 33% disapprove and a further 13% are not sure.

“These numbers are what you would expect with a new government, but even so, these are impressive numbers for the PCs,” said Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research. “While there isn’t an election taking place tomorrow we’ll be continuing to track public support for the government and its initiatives,” he added.

Manitobans were asked if the province should delay reducing the PST until the budget is balanced. The poll finds 32% support a delay while 45% say no delay is necessary. Meanwhile another 51% of Manitobans say any major future tax hikes should be put to a vote.

“The financial pressures the government is facing means future budgets will have to be very creative in balancing fiscal and political pressures,” continued Maggi. “While many Manitobans would like to see the PST decreased immediately the government may not be able to afford it particularly because the deficit the PCs have inherited is much larger than previously estimated. That being said, Premier Pallister has four years in front of him and will be judged based on what he delivers before the next election. It’s not surprising there hasn’t been much talk from this government about the PST because they may have realized it’s a promise they can’t afford to keep,” he finished.
