Manitobans Pessimistic About Provincial Economy

July 25, (Ottawa, ON) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll conducted for the Winnipeg Sun finds Manitobans pessimistic about the provincial economy but much more confident about their own personal circumstances. The Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.82%, 19 times out of 20.

“This is a familiar trend across the country,” said Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research. “We typically see much more confidence about people’s own personal lives than we do about the provincial picture. However, these scores do show quite a gloomy outlook despite a recent provincial election and a new and popular provincial government.” he added.

“Despite the economic outlook, 49% of Manitobans, almost half, think the province is headed in the right direction overall. Those in Winnipeg are the least likely to say the province is going the right way, in Winnipeg 37% say it is headed the wrong way, compared to 32% outside Winnipeg who say the same.”

“Looking at Winnipeg city council, Mayor Bowman has seen little movement in his numbers compared to our survey from last month. 63% approve of his job performance while 52% approve of Winnipeg City Council as a whole. When we asked Winnipegers if they approved of their local city councillor 51% said they did which is atypical as usually we see higher scores for ‘local councillor’ than generic city council. Winnipegers disapprove a little more of their local councillor (37%) compared to city council (34%). Mayor Bowman’s disapproval is only at 27%,” finished Maggi.
