Three Way Race Emerges in Saskatoon

Saskatchewan Flag

September 30, 2016 (Montréal, QC) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll finds a tight three way race has emerged for mayor. The Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.38%, 19 times out of 20.

“Don Atchison leads the race with 26% (-3%), with Charlie Clark a close second at 23% (-1%) and Kelley Moore right behind at 22% (+4%)” said David Valentin, Executive Vice-President of Mainstreet Research. “The number of undecided voters has actually gone up and now stands at 28% – the opposite of what we would expect as the campaign progresses. Meanwhile newcomer Devon Hein stands at 1%.”

“It’s the large pool of undecided voters who would make the difference in the election campaign. Among voters ‘certain to vote’ the number jumps to 32% undecided.”

“There are opportunities and challenges for all mayoral candidates. Looking at favourability ratings we see just over half of the city has an unfavourable view of Don Atchison (51%) while Charlie Clark is seen favourably by 34% and unfavourably by 29% – a five point gap. And despite the fact Kelley Moore is polling well not many know too much about her, 67% of Saskatoon residents either have no firm opinion or are not familiar with Moore. One thing they do know however: she is not Charlie Clark or Don Atchison. ”

“Moore stands to benefit if either Atchison or Clark’s support drops but it would be Charlie Clark who would be the primary beneficiary if Moore’s support were to falter. We’re seeing volatile numbers right now with a high undecided rate and mainly soft support for the mayoral candidates.”

“This poll was taken before the Mayoral Forum held by the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce so we will have to see if there is any movement from the first major televised event. Right now this looks like a tight three way race,” finished Valentin.
