Tight Race for Saskatoon Mayoralty

Saskatchewan Flag

August 3, (Montréal, QC) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia Saskatoon poll finds a close contest in the race for Mayor. The Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.46%, 19 times out of 20.

“With a margin of error just shy of 3.5% Charlie Clark and Don Atchison are in a dead heat,” said David Valentin, executive vice-president of Mainstreet Research. “While the campaign is not yet in full swing it looks like voters are already beginning to look at their options for the fall. Right now it looks to be a tight two-way race but that could change if Henry DayDay is able to substantially grow his support.”

“Most Saskatoon voters are undecided when it comes to naming a second choice – so there is plenty of opportunities for growth for all three candidates.”

“When we looked at other issues affecting the city we saw Saskatoon split on the potential for a new downtown arena. While 40% are in favouring of a exploring a new development, 35% say they would prefer to see renovations to the aging SaskTel Centre.”

“One thing that Saskatoon residents are sure of is that the quality of their roads isn’t getting any better,” continued Valentin. “42% say their quality is staying the same while another 39% say the quality is actually getting worse. We’ll be looking to see what the mayoral candidates have to say about roads and infrastructure with residents seeing little to no improvement in road conditions in the city.”

“Looking at crime and safety most Saskatoon residents approve of the Saskatoon Police Service (55%) – but 35% say crime is increasing while another 37% say crime levels are staying the same. Fully 1 in 5 Saskatoon residents say they’re not sure what to think of the Saskatoon Police Service at all. Meanwhile 43% oppose the police practice of carding while 38% support it. Another 19% aren’t sure,” he finished.
